The Story of the Autograph

Robert Awalt is a former tight end in the National Football League. His career spanned from 1987 through 1993 and he played for the St. Louis/Phoenix Cardinals, Dallas Cowboys, and Buffalo Bills.

Awalt was born in Landstuhl, Germany but went to high school in California. He played quarterback in high school and went on to play his college football at the University of Nevada. He redshirted his first year and then moved on to Sacramento City College and played tight end. In his junior year he transferred to San Diego State. The Cardinals, in St. Louis at the time, drafted him in the third round of the 1987 NFL Draft with the 62nd overall pick.

He came into the league backing up Jay Novacek but was thrust into the starting role when Novacek went down with an injury. He started with nine receptions in each of his first two games, tying a franchise record, and ended up second among NFC tight ends for the year with 42 receptions. He put up some good numbers in that first season and was voted to the 1987 All-Rookie team.

In 1990 he moved to the Cowboys. Funnily enough, Novacek had also moved on the the Cowboys as well and they were to compete for the starting tight end job again. But he fell behind Novacek and had some injuries he had to deal with as well.

In 1992 he moved on to Denver via free agency but didn’t make the roster out of training camp. The Bills picked him up and he played with them for a couple years in their golden years as a backup/special teams guy.

Rob has a pretty cool autograph. I really like the style of his “A”. It reminds me of the ribbons people where to support different causes. His “R” kind of appears like a “P” and then he definitely uses the “b” in his first name and not much else. These are pretty strong signatures overall.

Thanks Mr. Awalt! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
