The Story of the Autograph

Rick Luecken is a former right-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played in the 1989 and 1990 seasons for the Kansas City Royals, Atlanta Braves, and Toronto Blue Jays.

Luecken is a native of Texas. He was first drafted by the San Francisco Giants in the first round of the 1979 MLB Draft with the 18th overall pick. But after coming out of high school he decided not to sign and instead go to Texas A&M. Two years later the Cincinnati Reds took him in the 12th round but he still didn’t sign. It wasn’t until the next year that the Seattle Mariners picked him in the 27th round of the 1983 MLB Draft that he would sign with a team. But he never appeared for the Mariners. He was traded to the Royals with Danny Tartabull for Scott Bankhead, Mike Kingery, and Steve Shields.

He made his major league debut on June 6, 1989 for the Royals. That year he pitched in relief for 19 games, pitching 23.2 innings for a 2-1 record and 3.42 ERA. After the season he was traded again with Charlie Leibrandt to the Braves for Gerald Perry and Jim Lemasters. He got his best shot in the majors, getting into 36 games but put up a 1-4 record with a 5.77 ERA. That lead to the Braves putting him on waivers and he moved to the Blue Jays. He only played one more game in the majors that year and it would be his last.

Rick likes to put a lot on your card. Each one of these is personalized, then I think says “saved by grace”, is signed and finally has a bible verse which I think is from Revelations. He does all that and seems to sign it all around the cards. I imagine that could be troublesome on some cards, but I guess he has one more corner’s worth of real estate to play with.

Thanks Mr. Luecken! I’m giving this return a 6 overall.
