The Story of the Autograph

Ray Childress played on the defensive line in the NFL for the Houston Oilers from 1985 through 1995 and the Dallas Cowboys in 1996. In the beginning of his career he played at the defensive End position and toward the end he played as a defensive tackle. He’s a member of the College Football Hall of Fame, he was a five-time Pro Bowler, three-time First-team All-Pro (and three-time Second-team All-Pro) and a two-time First-team All-American.

Childress went to college at Texas A&M. In his junior year with the Aggies he had 15 sacs and 117 tackles in 1983. In 1984, as a senior he played on the No. 5 ranked pass defense. That year he had 10 sacks and 124 tackles. When he left his 25 sacks was a school record for a non-linebacker and his 360 tackles were fourth on the school’s career list.

In 1985, the Oilers drafted Childress with the third overall pick in the draft. He could have gone first overall but the Bills selected Bruce Smith that year and Childress slipped to the Oilers. He played at the end of the defensive line until a switch scheme to a 4-3 meant the Oilers would use an extra lineman. He continued his great career on the interior of the line and continued to make the Pro Bowl. Four of the eight lowest rushing totals against the Oilers in there history came during his time as a tackle.

But he was great against the pass too. He finished his career as the second all-time in sacks. He was pretty much a lock for at least eight sacks a year between 1988 and 1993. His best sack total was 13 during the 1992 season. Childress shares the record for most fumbles recoveries in a game with the three he got against the Redskins in 1988. That helped him to a total of seven that year which is only two off the record.

I don’t have too many of them, but these Pro Set art cards are my absolute favorites to get back in the mail with some ink on them. Really any art card I’ve round looks pretty awesome. Ray has a great clear signature and it’s a pretty good size. He used a great marker and the blue really comes out well on these cards. I think they actually look better in person than they do in the picture.

Thanks Mr. Childress! These get a 7.
