The Story of the Autograph

Raul Allegre is a former placekicker in the National Football League. He played from 1983 through 1991 with the Colts, Giants and Jets.

Allegre is originally from Mexico but went to high school in Washington State as an exchange student. He grew up playing soccer and the football coach asked him to try kicking a football. He could get great distance from his kicks but they would go below the crossbar. As the story goes he thought they were supposed to go under like soccer and the coach asked him to kick over the bar. He first took his talents to the University of Montana on a partial scholarship and ended up playing for the Texas Longhorns after transferring.

The Cowboys first signed him as an undrafted free agent after the 1983 NFL Draft. But he didn’t get to play a game for them before being traded to Baltimore. He played with them through their move to Indianapolis and then was waived in 1986. Thankfully for Allegre, the Giants had an opening due to an injury and helped them to the Super Bowl.

In 1990, while still with the Giants, the reverse happened. It was Allegre who was hurt and the Giants brought in Matt Bahr to kick and help them to the Super Bowl against the Bills. He was released the next year and went across the stadium to the Jets to replaced an injured Pat Leahy. He was released the next year during Training Camp and later retired due to a back injury.

The Score on Raul Allegre – 5.5

Raul has a pretty active looking signature. I think these cards are so busy and then with that thin marker it makes the signatures a bit difficult to stick out. One thing I noticed with these cards is that kickers have it rough. There’s a pretty good chance you are going to get a backup QBs butt on your card.

Thanks Mr. Allegre! I’m giving this one a 5.5.
