The Story of the Autograph

Randy Niemann is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1979 through 1987 with the Astros, Pirates, White Sox, Mets, and Twins.

Niemann was born and raised in California. He was originally drafted by the Montreal Expos in the 1974 MLB Draft, but chose not to sign. He was drafted again in 1975, in both instances of the MLB Draft that year (regular and secondary phases), but he didn’t signed until it was the Yankees selecting him in the second round of the secondary phase help in June of that year. He wouldn’t make it to the Yankees in the majors though. In 1977 he was traded with Mike Fischlin to the Astros for Cliff Johnson in June of that year. He would make his major league debut with Houston two years later on May 20, 1979.

Niemann’s most significant time came in his first two years in Houston, his first year in Pittsburgh and his 1986 year in New York when he was part of their World Series Championship team with a 2-3 record and 3.79 ERA in 31 appearances with one start. He bounced around a bit between teams and was part of three other trades in his career. He finished his career in Minnesota but wasn’t part of the Twins roster for their postseason run in 1987.

After his playing days he worked as a coach and instructor in the Mets organization. He also worked for the Red Sox and most recently in the Cardinals organization.

The Score on Randy Niemann – 6.5

Randy has a pretty big signature in the beginning and then it has this big tail for his last name. All of these came out OK except for the 1983 Topps card which you can see below has a bit of a smudge at the end of his name. Something odd on that card is that he had wrist bands on as a pitcher. I really can’t remember a pitcher wearing those and I don’t see him wearing them on the other cards.

Thanks Mr. Niemann! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
