The Story of the Autograph

Cliff Johnson played primarily as a designated hitter in the majors. When used in the field he played first base, sometimes at catcher and a little in the outfield. His career lasted 15 years from 1972 through 1986. During his time in the majors he played for seven teams: Houston Astros, New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics, Toronto Blue Jays (twice), and Texas Rangers.

Johnson played catcher during his high school days in San Antonio, Texas. The Astros drafted him in 1966 with the 83rd overall pick and he spent six season in the minors. He made his debut in 1972 as a September call-up and played a handful of games over the rest of that season and the next. He played with the Astros until he was traded to the Yankees during the 1977.

It was a fortuitous trade for Johnson as he would win two World Series titles during his time with the Yankees in 1977 and 1978, both over the Dodgers. Then in 1979 he was traded to the Indians. It was two months after a locker room brawl he had wit Goose Gossage and it put Gossage on the DL. He was a fan favorite during his two stints with Toronto and he held the MLB record for pinch hit home runs with 20 until Matt Stairs broke the record in 2010.

Cliff has a pretty straightforward autograph. It’s a tiny bit shaky it seams. There’s nothing super special about it though. I love that I was able to get the “Record Breaker” card signed though. I find it even more special when cards like that appear and you can get them signed. Even if the record is broken, as this one is, it was still a record that existed at that time.

Thanks Mr. Johnson! I’m giving this a 5.5.
