The Story of the Autograph

Rance (which is actually his middle name) Mulliniks is a former third baseman and shortstop in the major leagues. He played from 1977 to 1992 with the California Angels, Kansas City Royals and Toronto Blue Jays.

Mulliniks was born and raised in California and was drafted out of high school by the Angels in the third rounds of the 1974 MLB Draft. He made his debut for the Angels three years later on June 18, 1977. He never played more than 78 games for the Angels in a season and he moved on the the Royals in a trade along with Willie Aikens. In his two years with the Royals he had even less playing time making it into no more than 36 games in a season.

In 1982 he moved on to the Toronto Blue Jays where he would play his best season. He started to get a significant playing time with no less than 103 games played between 1982 and 1989. He had five season during that time with 10-12 homers and 42-57 RBI. In addition to that he bit over .300 four times with a high of .324 in 1984. That year he was named to Sport Illustrated’s Dram Team as a utility infielder.

He retired after the 1992 season after having two seasons where his playing time declined. He would work as a color commentator later in his retirement.

The Score on Rance Mulliniks – 6.5

Rance really puts a ton of ink on your card. His signature is a bit odd in that his “R” kind of looks like a “J”. Still he fills it up. You can can see that he has a stacked signature on three of these cards and then it’s on one line on the ’82 Topps card. I’m not sure why he did that on that one, but maybe it had something to do with the facsimile signature or that he might not have wanted to sign on his face at all.

Thanks Mr. Mulliniks! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
