The Story of the Autograph

Paul Gruber played in the NFL from 1988 through 1999. He spent his entire career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an offensive tackle. Paul was born and raised in Wisconsin and was a Wisconsin Badger in college. The Bucs drafted him with the fourth overall pick in the 1988 draft.

In his first five years in the league Gruber never missed a snap. He started all of the 183 games he played in the league which was a record broken by Derrick Brooks in 2007.

He was a good player on a bad team for most of his career. In fact, some of the teams he played with early on were some of the worst in Bucs history. And that’s saying something. Teams he played on had a losing record in his first nine season and those years were part of an NFL record streak of 12-consecutive 10-loss seasons.

He suffered a broken leg in 1999 and missed the last part of the season. That year the Bucs went to the NFC Championship Game. He had a tough recovery and ultimately retired that summer before the 2000 season. Paul made the All-Pro team twice (1991 and 1992) and in 2012 he was inducted into the Bucs Ring of Honor.

Paul has a nice big autograph, but the marker he used didn’t come out great. I’m might have to get choosier about how I used the eraser on some of the cards before I send them though. I’m wondering if that’s doing it sometimes. Of course I’d rather have this than smears or something like that. The 1991 Pro Set Platinum card is the best of the lot though. It’s nice and light and the autograph sticks out the best of the three.

Thanks Mr. Gruber! I’m giving these a 5.5.
