The Story of the Autograph

Oddibe McDowell is a former outfield in the major leagues. He primarily played in Center Field for the Rangers (twice), Indians, and Braves from 1985 through 1994.

McDowell grew up in Florida and was a multi-sport start in high school. That included winning a Class 4A wrestling championship at 155 pounds. That’s not generally what I would think a future centerfielder would excel at. He went on to Arizona State where he won the Golden Spikes award in 1984. He also went on later that year to the Olympics in Los Angeles to help the team to a silver.

He was drafted five times before he signed with a team. The Cardinals, Yankees, Blue Jays, and Twins all tried to draft him while he was in school but he didn’t sign until the Ranger came back around again in June of 1984. He debuted for them early in the next season on My 19, 1985.

After a few years with the Rangers he was traded along with Jerry Browne and Pete O’Brien to the Indians for Julio Franco. Then he was traded again the next year in 1989 for Dion James to send him to the Braves. He played two years with the Braves before bouncing around a bit and finally returning to the rangers. He played his last game on August 10, 1994.

His most successful time at the plate was after he was traded to the Braves. In the 76 games he played for them he hit .304 with seven homers and 24 RBI. But his lifetime average was .253. He showed a bit more power in his early days when he hit 18 homers (a career high) in each of his first two seasons. And he could always put up a good chunk of stolen bases.

This is by far the best return I’ve had from Oddibe. The others I have are smudged or kind of rubbed or wiped off and they look really bad. One of these, the ’90 Fleer, will actually be an upgrade to what I have thankfully. He always puts so much into his signature, but it is a lot of letters he has to get through.

Thanks Mr. McDowell! I’m giving this return a 6.
