The Story of the Autograph
Milt Thompson is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played from 1984 through 1996 with the Braves, Phillies (twice), Cardinals, Astros, Dodgers and Rockies.
Thompson was drafted by the Braves in the 1979 MLB Draft with the 29th overall pick in the second round of the draft. Several years later he made his debut with the Braves on September 4 1984. He wasn’t a full time player in Atlanta in those first years. But a trade to the Phillies between the 1985 and 1986 seasons started to change that.
Thompson started getting much more playing time during his second season with the Phillies. In 150 games in 1987 he hit .302 with seven home runs (a career high), 43 RBI, and 46 stolen bases (also a career high). He was later moved to St. Louis where he continued to put up some solid seasons.
In 1993 he moved back to the Phillies as a free agent. It was just in time for both he and the Phillies. Thompson was part of the worst to first 1993 NL Championship team where he would platoon with Pete Incaviglia. It was another solid season for Thompson even though it ended in a World Series loss to the Blue Jays.
After bouncing around a bit he would retire before the end of the 1996 season. He immediately moved into coaching with the Devil Rays organization. He would eventually get back to the Phillies where he worked as a coach from 2004 through 2010 including the Phillies World Series Championship in 2008. These days he works for the Reds.
The Score on Milt Thompson – 7.0
Milt has a great signature. There’s a little bit of everything in there: zig zags, loops, curls, short cuts, not so short cuts… all sorts of good stuff. My favorite is the 1994 Upper Deck card. I’m actually a bit surprised that there isn’t a smudge on that one as I’ve noticed those really glossy cards getting smeared lately. But it seems like Milt might be good enough to make sure they are dry before putting them back in the envelope.
Thanks Mr. Thompson! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
