The Story of the Autograph

Jimy Williams is a former player and manager in the major leagues. He played for the Cardinals in 1966 and ’67 and he later managed from 1986 to 2004. He managed the Blue Jays, Red Sox, and Astros in different stints throughout that time.

Williams was born and raised in California and after his playing days were cut short by injury he started his managerial career. His first professional gig was with the Blue Jays in 1996 when Bobby Cox headed back to the Braves. Williams stayed in Toronto until 1989 when he was replaced by Cito Gaston after a terrible start. Gaston would lead the team to an AL east title that year.

In 1997 he got another shot with the Boston Red Sox. He would lead them to playoff appearances in 1998 and 1999. In 1999 he led them all the way to the ALCS before losing to the hated Yankees. But he was chosen as the AL Manager of the Year that season. Eventual his relationship with the front office went bad and the Red Sox fired him after a slump in August of 2001.

Williams’ last shot was with the Houston Astros from 2002 through 2004. He was replaced by Phil Garner who led the Astros to the 2004 NL Champioship Series after coming in after the All-Star break.

In the end, he was over .500 for each stint with the teams he managed, but he only made the playoffs with the Red Sox. His career record in 1700 games exactly is 910-790 for a .535 record.

The Score on Jimy Williams – 6.5

Jimmy has a nice signature. It’s big which is always nice for me. It is a little odd in that I don’t know exactly how is is writing “Jimy” but it works. It’s a bit of hieroglyphics I guess. The blue looks good for the Blue Jays cards certainly, but it does get a little hidden on the ’87 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Williams! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
