The Story of the Autograph

Mike Garman pitched in the majors in 1969 and then from 1971 through 1978. He spent time with the Red Sox, Cardinals, Cubs, Dodgers and Expos over that time.

Garman was born and raised in Idaho. He was signed by the Red Sox after graduating from high school and went into their farm system for the next three years. In 1969 the Sox made him a September call-up and he debuted with a win against the rival Yankees on September 22, 1969. He had just turned twenty six days earlier. He would head back to the minors for a few years and was also a September call-up in 1971 and 1972. He was a member of the bullpen in 1973 and was used mostly in a mop up role. The Red Sox traded him to the Cardinals before the next season.

He had some great seasons with the Cardinals with an ERA in the 2’s in both his years there and picked up a few saves before he was traded to the Cubs with a player to be named later and Don Kessinger. The Cubs would trade Garman to the Dodgers in 1977 along with Rick Monday for Bill Buckner, Ivan De Jesus and Jeff Albert. He got to the postseason with the Dodgers and appeared in two game in the 1977 NLCS and then two more games in the 1977 World Series and didn’t allow a run.

After being traded to the Expos during the 1978 season he didn’t make the team in Spring Training the next year. He tried to make it with the Pirates and Indians again but couldn’t make it out of the minors and retired.

The Score on Mike Garman – 7.0

When I looked at Mike’s first name in his signature I thought it looked a lot like the hieroglyphic style of Jim Acker’s. But then when I looked at his last name it looked kind of standard. So he has a bit of combo going on. He signed it with a good marker though and it’s a good size. Plus with that clean white Dodgers jersey it give a great place for a signature.

Thanks Mr. Garman! I’m giving this a 7.
