The Story of the Autograph

Mike Bordick is a former shortstop in the major leagues. His career spanned from 1990 to 2003 and he played for the Oakland Athletics, Baltimore Orioles (twice), New York Mets, and Toronto Blue Jays.

Bordick was born in Michigan but his family moved around frequently as his Dad was in the Air Force. He went to high school in Maine and then went to the University of Maine. He wasn’t drafted and the Oakland Athletics signed him as an amateur free agent on July 10, 1986. After four years in the minors he made his major league debut on April 11, 1990.

He spent his first seven years in the majors with the A’s. By the 1992 season he was the full time shortstop. He was a typical shortstop offensively at the time but was always a good fielder. He moved to Baltimore as a free agent after the 1996 season. His move their was because Cal Ripken was moving to third base.

In the 2000 season he made his one and only All-Star team and was then traded to the Mets so they could replace Rey Ordonez who was injured. That Mets team eventually made it to the World Series and would lose to the Yankees. He was back in Baltimore the following season. He played in Toronto for one season before calling it a career.

In more recent years he’s worked as a minor league instructor and until 2021 was part of the Baltimore Orioles broadcasting crew.

The Score on Mike Bordick – 6.5

One of the things I like about this return from Mike is that I got him on a card from the teams he represented the most, or kind of the most significantly. Obviously he was only with the Mets a short time, but part of that was a Subway Series. The blue marker looks best on that card, but maybe that’s just me as a Mets fan.

Thanks Mr. Bordick! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
