The Story of the Autograph

Merv Rettenmund is a former outfielder in the major leagues. He played in the majors from 1968 to 1980 with the Orioles, Reds, Padres and Angels. He later coached with several teams from 1983 through 2007.

Rettenmund was born in Flint, Michigan and was signed by the Orioles in 1964 as an amateur free agent. After several years in the minors he made his major league debut on April 14, 1968. He was with the Orioles through 1973 and went to the World Series with them twice, winning in 1970. He also with the Reds when they won in 1975.

His best season was most definitely 1971. That year he made it into 141 games, by far his most played in one season. He hit .318 with 11 homers, 75 RBI (a career high), and 15 stolen bases (also a career high).

Merv has a signature that I would say borders on something very old school. And when I say old school I mean like the guys who sign as if they were in the Revolutionary War. I don’t say that to mean I don’t like it. I love how all the autographs have different styles and mixes of styles.
