The Story of the Autograph

Bill Swift is a former right-handed pitcher who played from 1985 through 1998. He played for the Mariners, Giants, and Rockies.

Swift was born and raised in Maine. He attended the University of Maine and played baseball from 1981 though 1984. During those years he helped the Black Bears make the College World Series found consecutive times. He would then play for the United States in the Olympics in Los Angeles 1984.

The Seattle Mariners selected Swift with the second overall selection of the 1984 MLB Draft. He made his debut the next year on June 7, 1985. After the 1991 season he was traded to the Giants with Dave Burba and and Mike Jackson for Kevin Mitchel and Mike Remlinger. He went from a reliever to a starter and would lead the NL in ERA in 1992 and in wins in 1993. He would later move on to the Rockies and struggle through injuries and then close out his career with the Mariners for a final season in 1998.

Even though he led the league in ERA in 1992 with a 2.08 ERA in 30 games with 22 starts, and finished second in the Cy Young Award voting that year… 1993 is his best year to me. He went 21-8 in 34 starts and had a 2.82 ERA in 232.2 innings.

Bill has a pretty cool signature. I would say his signature feels like his name. I hope that makes sense, but it just feel like his name. Its a bit loopy but also a little loose. I especially love it on the Collector Choice and Ultra cards.

Thanks Mr. Swift! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
