The Story of the Autograph

Matt Alexander is a former utility player in the major leagues. He played from 1973 to 1981 with the Chicago Cubs, Oakland Athletics and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Alexander was born and raised in Shreveport, Louisiana. He attended Grambling State University and was drafted by the Cubs in the second round of the 1968 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut for them five years later on August 23, 1973.

He was never much of a hitter with career .214 average, no home runs and only four RBI. But he played every position except for pitcher, catcher and first base during his career and he could run. He was mostly used as a pinch runner with the Athletics and when Chuck Tanner moved on to the Pittsburgh from Oakland, he brought the man he called “Matt the Scat” with him.

To give you an idea of how much they used him as a pinch runner in Oakland, let’s looks at what might be his best year there in 1975. He played in 90 games and had a .238 average. But he stole 26 bases and was caught 14 times. So that means he had 40 attempts. Consider then that he had only 14 hits and walks combined.

Alexander was a member of the Pirates 1979 World Series Championship team.

The Score on Matt Alexander – 7.5

Matt has a pretty simple signature, but it came out really great on both of these 1978 Topps cards. That black marker was nice and thick and it really pops on the really bright cards. I would have thought that a marker like this would bleed a bit on the old cards but they came out great.

Thanks Mr. Alexander! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
