The Story of the Autograph

Mark Huismann is a former left-handed  relief pitcher in the major leagues. His nine year career spanned from 1983 to 1991 and during that time he played with the Kansas City Royals, Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Baltimore Orioles and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Huismann was born in Nebraska and grew up in Colorado. There’s a bit of a discrepancy between his cards, Wikipedia and Baseball Reference, but two out of the three are consistent with this. He attended Colorado State University and was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 23rd round of the 1979 MLB Draft and did not sign. He didn’t get drafted again, but the Royals signed him as an amateur free agent in 1980.

He spent a few seasons in the minors and made his debut on August 16, 1983. According to Wikipedia he drove his parents’ car to the game and almost didn’t make it because it was overheating. He would bounce between the majors and minors with the Royals and then be traded to the Mariners in 1986 and then from the Mariners to the Indians in 1987. After that he jumped around as a free agent until the end of his career.

His best season was probably in 1986 when he spent time in Kansas City and Seattle. He went 3-4 with a 3.79 ERA in 46 games and 97.1 innings. For his career he was 13-11 with a 4.49 ERA.

The Score on Mark Huismann – 6.5

Mark has a very zig-zaggy signature. I actually really like his “H” and the way that the horizontal line goes with the rest of the way he signs his last name. The blue-on-blue is a little tough for these cards but I always like the way it goes with the colors on the cards and the uniforms.

Thanks Mr. Huismann! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
