The Story of the Autograph

Mark Dewey is a former relief pitcher in the major leagues. The right-hander played from 1990 to 1996 with the San Francisco Giants (twice), New York Mets, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

Dewey is a native of Michigan. He went to college at Grand Valley State University. From there he was drafted by the Giants in the 23rd round of the 1987 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut with the Giants on August 24, 1990. He pitched in 14 games that first season and went 1-1 with a 2.78 ERA.

He moved around a bit in his career. None of those moves were via trade. He was selected off waivers twice, by the Pirates and Mets, and then as a free agent in going back to the Giants to close out his professional career. His best season might have been 1994 witht he Pirates. That year he made it into 45 games and went 2-1 with a 3.68 ERA.

Dewey is a religious person and famously refused to participate in a pregame ceremony in 1996 that supported AIDS research. He didn’t partake in the ceremony and wore a ribbon sideways. He cited the reason as being against his Christian principles.

The Score on Mark Dewey – 6.5

Mark has a pretty standard signature, but while it might be simple, it is also neat and effective. The marker he used is really strong. It sticks out best on the cards where he is in a Giants/minor league uniforms. It’s a nice signature on the 1993 Fleer cards but it mixes in with the Mets warm up jacket.

Thanks Mr. Dewey! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
