The Story of the Autograph

Luis Alicea is a former second baseman in the major leagues. He played for the Cardinals (in two stints), Red Sox, Angels, Rangers, and Royals between 1988 and 2002.

Alicea was born and raised in Puerto Rico. He played college baseball at Florida State before being drafted by the Cardinals with the 23rd overall pick in the 1986 MLB Draft. His first appearance was on April 23, 1988, but then he went back to the minors and next appeared in the 1991 season while still with the Cardinals.

He spent most of his first seasons only playing about have a season in St. Louis, except for 1993 when he played in 115 games. He was traded to Boston for the 1995 season and appeared in 132 games and even appeared in the postseason for the first time and played well despite the Red Sox losing to the Indians. He would be back in St. Louis, and back in the postseason, with the Cardinals the next season in 1996.

He would move on to the Rangers and Royals, but it looks like he had his best statistical season with the Rangers in 2000. He played in a career high 139 games with 6 homers (matching a career high), 63 RBI (a career high) and a .294 average (another career high).

After his playing career he went on to coach in the minors and the majors.

Luis has what looks like it would be a fun signature. Unfortunately I got the end of whatever this marker had left. I think it game out the clearest on the 1989 Score card, but that isn’t my favorite card of this lot. I’ll have to try him again in the future to see if I can improve on these.

Thanks Mr. Alicea! I’m giving this return a 4 overall.
