The Story of the Autograph

Jose Lind is a former second baseman in Major League Baseball. He played from 1987-1992 with the Pirates, 1993-1995 with the Royals, and then in 1995 with the California Angels.

Lind hails from Puerto Rico and is the cousin of former MLB player Onix Concepcion. The Pirates started his path to the big leagues by signing him as an undrafted free agent in 1982. Even in the minors he didn’t have power, but it was his defense that would be his greatest asset to get him through the minors. He debuted with the Pirates on August 28, 1987 and the next day the Pirates traded Johnny Ray, the current starter at the time, to the Angels.

He was on the Pirates team that were great in the NL East in those days. His defense was his biggest contribution and he was recognized for it in 1992 when he one his first and only Gold Glove Award, breaking Ryne Sandberg’s streak at second base. After the season he was traded to Kansas City. His performance began to decline and he started to use drugs and have other off field problems.

After going through rehab he would later coach in the minor leagues.

The Score on Jose Lind – 5.5

Jose has a fancy signature which goes with the thin marker he used. Unfortunately those black Pirates uniforms aren’t always the greatest to make a signature work on a card. And that is especially so when the marker is thin. Still that Upper Deck card looks pretty sweet even though it’s an odd picture.

Thanks Mr. Lind! I’m giving these a 5.5.
