The Story of the Autograph

Lou Piniella was an outfielder, primarily left fielder, in the major leagues with the Orioles, Indians, Royals, and Yankees. He debuted in 1964 with the Orioles but only played in four games with one at bat. He made into six games with six plate appearances in 1968 with the Indians and then moved one to have some good years with the Royals and Yankees.

Piniella was born and raised in the Tampa, Florida area. He was signed by the Indians as an amateur free agent in1962, but was then drafted by the Senator from the Indians later that year. In August of 1964 for was traded to the Orioles. He wouldn’t make it back to the majors until 1968 with the Indians after being traded there in 1966. In 1968 he Seattle Pilots selected him in an expansion draft but traded to the Royals after Spring Training in 1969. After all that movement in the 60’s, Piniella would only play with just the Royals and Yankees.

There were two highlights during his during is five year tenure with the Royals. In 1969, the first season he got significant time with any club, he won the Rookie of the Year award. he played in 135 games and hit .282 with 11 homers and 68 RBI. He was actually the first batter in Royals history that year wen he led off the first game in their first season. The other highlight was his only All-Star appearance in 1972 when he hit .312 with 11 homers and 72 RBI as well as leading the league in doubles. After the 1973 season he was traded to the Yankees.

From there Piniella was part of some great teams. He was a Yankee for eleven seasons and won back-to-back titles with them in 1977 and 1978. They also won the pennant two other times in 1976 and 1981. After retiring as a player he joined the Yankees coaching staff and also was their manager and then General Manager from 1986-88. He continued to manage several team and in only one place did he not have a winning record in his time with that team (Tampa Bay).

Lou has a pretty good signature. I think the only think I don’t like about it is that I wish it filled up the card a bit more. I’ve only got this one card signed of his so maybe it was because he didn’t want to sign his face or something like that. I’ll definitely be sending another card Lou’s way. When do you have the chance at a RoY, MoY and World Series Champ all in one.
