The Story of the Autograph

Lerrin LaGrow is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues. He mostly worked in relief with two  years as a full closer and two as a full starter in his ten year career. He played from 1970 to 1980 with the Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies.

LaGrow is a native of Arizona. He was born in Phoenix and grew up in Glendale. He went to college at Arizona State. He played there a couple years before being drafted by the Tigers in the sixth round of the 1969 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut with them the following year on July 28, 1970.

His first few years he worked in relief and mostly bounced up and down to the majors. In 1974 he got a shot and was a starter with 34 starts of the 37 games he appeared in. It didn’t go well though as he went 8-19 with a 4.66 ERA. The following year didn’t go much better with a 7-14 record and 4.38 ERA. That was pretty much the end of him as a starter in the league and he was moved to the Cardinals.

He really bounced around a bit from there. He spent a couple season in Chicago with the White Sox and they had him as their closer. In maybe his best season as a major leaguer he went 7-3 with a 2.46 ERA and 25 saves in 1977. He was back down to earth a little bit the following season. He would play for two more teams before closing out his career in 1980.

The Score on Lerrin LaGrow – 6.0

When you look at Lerrin’s “Ls” they can almost look like “Rs” right? Especially on that 1976 Topps card. That said, these came out well. You can see them clearly on the cards. Those 1978 Topps cards are not only a little beat up, but the one is severly off-cut, which might give it more character in my opinion.

Thanks Mr. LaGrow! I’m giving this return a 6.
