The Story of the Autograph
Leon Roberts is a former professional baseball player. He played as an outfielder for the Detroit Tigers, Houston Astros, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Toronto Blue Jays, and Kansas City Royals. His career spanned eleven seasons from 1974 through 1984.
Roberts was born and raised in Michigan. He went to the University of Michigan initially as a football recruit. The Tigers drafted him in the 10th round of the 1972 MLB Draft and he made his major league debut two years later on September 3, 1974. He was Al Kaline’s replacement after that 1974 season he received a good amount of playing time in 1975 when he played 129 games. But the Tigers traded him to the Astros after that 1975 season (along with Terry Humphrey).
He didn’t play much for the big ball club in Houston in the two years he was there and was traded again, this time to the start-up Seattle Mariners. He had some really productive years for the Mariners and definitely his career year in 1978. In 134 games and over 500 at bats he hit .301 with 22 home runs and 92 RBI, all career highs. He put up OK numbers the next two years but he got his best shot at playing time in Seattle.
He was traded a few more times to the Rangers (along with Rick Honeycutt) and then later to the Blue Jays (for Cecil Fielder) before ending his career with the Royals in 1984. At the end of his career it was revealed that he had terrible eyesight from an accident as a kid where he was stabbed in the eye with a knife. He hid it from everyone in his career and beat it by memorizing eye charts so no one found out.
The Score on Leon Roberts – 5.5
Leon signs with a thin marker that goes along with his signature pretty well. Those long, thin signatures are perfect for a marker like that. I think these cards are pretty busy to make it really come off great though. It’s a nice signature, it just doesn’t show up well on these. As far as the cards go, the wad he had in his mouth on the Fleer card is classic.
Thanks Mr. Roberts! I’m giving this return a score of 5.5.
