The Story of the Autograph

Lenny Wilkens is a former player and coach in the NBA. He played from 1960 to 1975 with the St. Louis Hawks, Seattle SuperSonics, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Portland Trail Blazers. He later coached between 1969 and 2005 with the Seattle SuperSonics (twice), Portland Trail Blazers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Atlanta Hawks, Toronto Raptors, and New York Knicks.

Wilkens is a native of Brooklyn, New York. He went on to play for Providence in college and led the team to its first NIT appearance. He left college as the second leading scorer in Friars history. He was later one of the inaugural inductees for the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006. He was drafted in the first round of the 1960 NBA Draft with the sixth overall pick.

As a player he was a nine-time All-Star and MVP of the All-Star game in 1971. He led the league in assists once in 1970 and retired only behind Oscar Robertson for the career mark. He score over 17,000 points in his career and was elected to the Hall of Fame as a player.

He also was elected as a coach. In 1979 he led the SuperSonics to the NBA Championship. He was also Coach of the Year in 1994. He was also an assistant and head coach for Olympic squads in some of the first Dream Team years.

Lenny has a nice signature but you can’t see it very well on two of these cards. Usually I’m complaining about a dark uniform, but in this case, Lenny’s uniform is a suit… and that’s dark too. That USA Basketball card looks pretty sweet though.
