The Story of the Autograph

Lenny Harris is a former pinch hitter and utility player in the major leagues. He had a career that spanned eighteen seasons from 1988 to 2005. During that time he played for the Cincinnati Reds (twice), Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets (twice), Colorado Rockies, Arizona Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, and Florida Marlins.

Harris is a native of Miami, Florida. The Reds drafted him out of high school with a fifth round pick in the 1983 MLB Draft. After five seasons in the minor leagues he made his major league debut with them on September 7, 1988. He played in parts of two seasons in Cincinnati before the first of four trades in his career, this one sending him to Los Angeles with Kal Daniels for Mariano Duncan and Tim Leary. It was also one of the many moves he made in his career as you can by the list of teams he played for.

The best season in his career came in 1990, the second of his five years in Los Angeles when he played in 137 games and hit .304 with two homers, 29 RBI and 15 stolen bases. He would become a key role player on a lot of teams and became known for holding the record for the most pinch hits in a career with 212. He played part on four playoff teams with two of them, the Mets and the Marlins, going to the World Series. The Marlins won the World Series in 2003, but Harris didn’t play in the Series.

In more recent seasons he’s coached in the minors and the majors. He worked for the Nationals and Dodgers mostly during Spring Training, but also coach for the Great Lakes Loons in the minor leagues. Most recently he was with the Reds organization.

The Score on Lenny Harris – 6.5

Lenny has a nice signature but these cards just didn’t help him put something great down. The Upper Deck card probably was the best candidate to show it off, but unfortunately you can see the smudge at the end of his signature on that one. Still, this is one that I didn’t think I’d be getting back so it was really nice to see.

Thanks Mr. Harris! I’m giving this one a 6.5 overall.
