The Story of the Autograph

Lary Sorensen was a right-handed starting pitcher in the major leagues from 1977 to 1988. Over those 11 seasons (he did not play in 1986) he played for the Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Cleveland Indians, Oakland Athletics, Chicago Cubs, Montreal Expos, and San Francisco Giants.

Sorensen was drafted by the Brewers in the eighth round of the 1976 draft. He made his major league debut with the Brewers the next year on June 7, 1977. His best season by far was 1978 when he won 18 games with a 3.21 ERA in 280.2 innings. That earned him his only All-Star Game appearance and he made the most of it by retiring nine batters in a row over the 3 innings he pitched. After spending four years with the Brewers he was traded to the Cardinals in a deal that brought Rollie Fingers, Ted Simmons and Pete Vukovich to the Brewers and then traded again in a three team deal that sent him to the Indians.

Like a lot of players who played in the 80’s, Lary fell into problems with drug and alcohol. He missed the entire 1986 season because he was suspended after being part of a group of players to admit to cocaine use. He played for two more years and continued to deal with is issues. He’s gone to jail for multiple DUI convictions.

The Score on Lary Sorensen – 6.5

Lary has a really big signature. I wish these cards were a bit better for him to sign though. The ’79 Topps card is probably the best. If not that one then the ’83 Donruss. The others just have some things that get in the way a bit. These are pretty clean though and they look good on the cards.

Thanks Mr. Sorensen! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
