The Story of the Autograph

Larry Johnson was a running back in the NFL for the Kansas City Chiefs, Cincinnati Bengals, Washington Redskins and Miami Dolphins. He’s best known for spending the majority of his career in Kansas City and was a Fantasy Football BEAST during those years.

Larry went to college at Penn State and was there as a senior in 2002 when he rushed for over 2,000 yards at a 7.7 yards per carry clip. He also caught 41 balls for 349 yards that year and score 23 overall touchdowns. He broke the Penn State record for rushing yards in a game three times that year including the 257 yards he ran during a 49-0 thrashing of Northwestern, 279 in a win against Illinois and 327 yards in a win again Indiana. He broke the 2,000 yard mark against Michigan State when he had 279 yards in the first half and didn’t even play in the second half. He was amazing but didn’t win the Heisman Trophy that year. He wond the Walter Camp, Maxwell, and Doak Walker Awards.

He was draft in the first round with the 27th overall pick in 2003 by the Chiefs. At the time the Chiefs had Priest Holmes but they didn’t know if he was going to be healthy. Coach Dick Vermeil didn’t want to draft him but the team did. They never really got along. But when he got his chance in 2004 he step in and ran for a Chiefs record 211 yards and two touchdowns again the Texans after Holmes went down with a neck injury. He was an amazing player in 2005 and 2006 and then he started losing changes, getting some injuries and getting a little frustrated in KC. After having two years of 1700+ yards rushing he wouldn’t have more than 874 again for a season and would never again play a full season.

Not too long ago I read an article that Larry has been dealing with some issues like depression, headaches and memory loss. He believes he has CTE and has stated he doesn’t even remember two season during his career. He trying to control his social life and spend more time with his daughter to deal with it.

The Score on Larry Johnson – 5.0

Larry really doesn’t have much to his signature. I really like his “L” but after that it’s kind of a mush of letters. It think the other thing about these cards it either the marker was maybe not a high end Sharpie, or these cards just didn’t take the marker well. They are a little gray if you know what I mean. I’m not sure what causes that. The ’08 card is the best. Ideally it would be a bit more centered I guess.

Thanks Mr. Johnson! These get a 5.
