The Story of the Autograph

Lance Johnson is a former center fielder in the major leagues. He played from 1987 to 2000. During that time he played for the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago White Sox, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees.

Johnson is a native of Ohio. He attended Triton College and then the University of South Alabama where he was drafted by the Cardinals in the sixth round of the 1984 MLB Draft. Prior to that the Pirates and Mariners had both tried to draft him. He made his major league debut on July 10, 1987. He played 33 games that first season and the Cardinals traded him to the White Sox for Ricky Horton. He spend the most significant portion of his career in Chicago, mostly with the White Sox but also with the Cubs later on.

His best season came in 1996 with the Mets when he earned his one-and-only All-Star appearance and even earned MVP votes. That year he led the league in hits with hits with 227 and triples with 21. He had an overall line of hitting .333 with nine homers, 31 doubles, 69 RBI and 50 stolen bases. But what make that year even better is the year before it. Lance is the only player in MLB history to lead the AL and NL in hits in back-to-back seasons as he led the AL in 1995.

He also led the league in triples five times. Four of those were in consecutive years with the White Sox and became the first player to do that. He’s also the third person to lead both leagues in triples and is only one of a handful of players to have three triples in one game.

He always wore number 1 and was nicknamed “One Dog” which was also the name of the record company he once had.

The Score on Lance Johnson – 7.5

Lance’s signature is always fun, especially with the “1 Dog” moniker on that. It’s definitely unique for that. While I love that I have him represented on Chicago cards, especially for the White Sox, I really need to get him to sign a Mets card. Of course I’m a fan but he also had his best season there.

Thanks Mr. Johnson! I’m giving this return a 7.5 overall.
