The Story of the Autograph

Kevin Dineen is a former right wing in the NHL. He played for the Hartford Whalers (twice), Philadelphia Flyers, Carolina Hurricanes, Ottawa Senators, and Columbus Blue Jackets from 1984 to 2003.

Dineen is a native of Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. He played junior hockey in Toronto with the St. Michael’s Buzzers before attending the University of Denver. The Whalers drafted him in the first round of the 1982 NHL Draft but he went back to school for a second season before going to Hartford. He started with the franchise in Binghamton and then was promoted and debuted on December 3, 1984.

He was a member of the Whalers for the next seven seasons and was one of their offensive highlights. He scored more than 30 goals in a season five time times in a season and four of those while he was a Whaler (one during a season where he was traded). His set his career high in goals with 45 in 1988-’89, the same time he set a career high in assists with 44 and made his way to being an All-Star that season.

He was traded to the Flyers for draft picks and played for his father, Bill Dineen, while he was there. His first two seasons there were great and then his productions started to dip. He was moved back to Hartford in a trade and was with them as they made their move to North Carolina to become the Hurricanes. He would finish with the Senators and Blue Jackets before calling it a career.

After playing he coached in the AHL before becoming the head coach of the Florida Panthers for 2011-2013. He then coach Team Canada’s women’s team to a fourth consecutive gold medal in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. Since then he’s been an assistant with the Blackhawks and more recently the head coach of the San Diego Gulls of the AHL and currently the Utica Comets, also of the AHL.

His family are heavily involved in hockey. His father played and coached and two of his four brothers also played: Gord and Peter.

I surprisingly only had one card of Kevin’s to sign. I really thought I had more of his cards and I’ll have to go back through my stuff so I can try for another signature from him. I like that this is a Whalers card though because he was with them (twice) for so long. I should look for a Flyers card of this though too. Unfortunately this image is so busy and there wasn’t a great place for him to put the signature that would make it stick out.

Thanks Mr. Dineen! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
