The Story of the Autograph

Jim Johnson is a former defenseman in the NHL. He played from 1985 to 1998 with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Minnesota North Stars/Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals, and Phoenix Coyotes.

Johnson is a native of Minnesota. He played in college at the University of Minnesota and was teammates there with Brett Hull. He wasn’t drafted and signed witht he Penguins in June of 1985. He made his debut that first season and was immediately a ful time player. Never too much of an offensive threat, he set a career high in assists his first season with 26. In his second season he set a career high in goals with five and added 25 assists.

He won the 1989 Aldege “Baz” Bastien Memorial Good Guy Award while with the Penguins. They traded him to the North Stars in the beginning of the 1990-’91 season and he was with them through the time they became the Dallas Stars. He was later dealt to the Capitals before moving on to Phoenix to play his final two seasons.

After retiring he coach youth hockey in Arizona. He later became an assistant with the Caps and then with the San Jose Sharks. He would move on to the Oilers after than. In more recent years he’s been with the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL.

Jim has a great signature and it might be one of my favorite hockey autographs. I love a repetive letter and Jim’s “J” takes it there. But the style on that letter is amazing. The style and the overlap make it really great. I think my favorite of these is the 1990 Score card because you can see it all the best.
