The Story of the Autograph

John Settle is a former running back in the NFL. He played from 1987 to 1990 and spent his entire career wit the Atlanta Falcons.

Settle was born and raised in North Carolina. He went to Rockingham County High School and still holds several record there. He went on to play at Appalachian State University having two pretty good seasons to close out his college career with 1,340 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns as a junior and then 1,600 yards rushing and 20 TDs as a senior. But that wasn’t enough to get him drafted and the Falcons signed him.

He didn’t play much at all that first season with only nine games and one start. But in 1988 he put up 1,024 yards rushing with seven touchdowns and then another 570 yards receiving and another touchdown to earn his only Pro Bowl appearance of his career. He put up 689 yards rushing the next season and then only made it into six games in his final season of 1990. He tried to make it with the Redskins but bruised ribs kept him out of games and he never stuck in the NFL.

Since then he’s been a coach seemingly everywhere. Starting with his alma mater in 1994 as a running back coach, he later move to the the pros with the Browns and Ravens, back to college, then back to the NFL. These days he is the the running backs coach for the Wisconsin Badgers.

John has a pretty good signature. While this looks Sharpie-ish, it’s not. These are the markers that make me think someone is signing with my kids old Crayola markers. Still there’s no smudging and his signature is a good size. It’s just a little busy on these cards, even if these are the Falcons white uniforms.

Thanks Mr. Settle! I’m giving this return a 6.
