The Story of the Autograph

Joe Pettini is a former major league infielder and coach in the major leagues. He played for the San Francisco Giants from 1980 to 1983 and coach for the St. Louis Cardinals and Houston Astros.

Pettini is a native of West Virginia and went to college at Mercer University in Georgia. He went undrafted after college and signed with the Montreal Expos as an amateur free agent in 1977. He never made it to the majors with the Expos though as they traded him to the Giants as the player to be named later to complete a deal before the 1980 season. He made his major league debut with the Giants on July 10, 1980.

In his four seasons in the majors Pettini never played in more than 63 games. He had a .203 average for his career with his best season being his rookie season with a .232 average. He hit one homer for his career and had 20 total RBI. After playing with the Giants he played in the minors with the Cardinals but never made it back to the bigs.

After his career ended he immediately went into coaching and stayed with the Cardinals. In 2002 Tony La Russa brought him to the majors as his bench coach and was there for two World Series championships.

Joe’s signature is as nice as his mustache. I like the “J” initial right up against the start of his last name. The way the two letters compliment each other is perfect. I like the black on these with the Giants uniforms but it does kind of get hidden in some places.

Thanks Mr. Pettini! I’m giving this return a 6.5.
