The Story of the Autograph

Jim Riggleman is currently the manager of the Cincinnati Reds after taking over for Bryan Price midway through this 2018 season. He’s been a manager with several teams going back to the early 90’s: San Diego Padres, Chicago Cubs, Seattle Mariners, Washington Nationals, and now the Reds. He’s also been a coach going back to the late 80’s with stops in St. Louis, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Seattle, Washington and Cincinnati.

As a player in the 70’s Jim was drafted by the Dodgers in 1974 and played as an infielder and outfielder. He played in the Dodgers and the Cardinals systems until about 1981. He reached the Triple-A level with the Cardinals in the last 70’s but never higher than that. At 28 Jim’s playing days were over. He went on to manage in the minors for a couple organizations and he was first hired as a coach in the majors in 1989 with the Cardinals. He received his first managerial position with the Padres in 1992.

His most significant time as a manager was with the Cubs from 1995 through 1999. He was able to lead the team to the Wild Card in the postseason in 1998 but they ultimately lost to the Atlanta Braves in the NLDS. That was the only full winning season in his career as a manager (aside from a 73-71 record in 144 games in 95). He got the Cubs to 90 wins that year after never having more than 76 wins in any particular year.

I remember him in DC for resigning when the team wouldn’t pick up his contract option for 2012. The Nationals have always been a bit weird (some say cheap, some say they don’t value the position) about managers in various ways. This might have just been one of the oddest situations.

The Score on Jim Riggleman – 6.0

Jim has a pretty standard autograph. I’m guessing it came out a little bigger on this card because of the landscape orientation and it would normally be slightly smaller. It’s pretty solid though and it does the job. I really thougth that I had a card of Jim’s from a previous managerial job but I had to go with this one when I couldn’t find what I was looking for.

Thanks Mr. Riggleman! This one gets a 6.
