Jack Del Rio is a former linebacker in the National Football League. He currently works as the defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, and was a coach prior to that as well as a head coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Oakland Raiders. He played in the league from 1985 to 1995 with the New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs, Dallas Cowboys and Minnesota Vikings.

Del Rio is a native of California. He played baseball and basketball in high school in addition to football and was all-state in each sport. He was actually picked by the Toronto Blue Jays out of high school with their 22nd round pick in 1981. But he opted to take a scholarship to play for the Trojans at USC. He even played baseball there with Mark McGwire and Randy Johnson. He was a runner of for the Lombardi Award and earned Rose Bowl co-MVP honors with his teammate Tim Green.

He was chosen in both the 1985 NFL Draft by the Saints and in the 1985 USFL Draft by the Los Angeles Express. He went to the Saints and started nine games. He set a record with five rumble recoveries and took of the in for a touchdown. He moved on to the Chiefs in a trade for a draft choice in 1987. This was a strike year and while picketing outside of the stadium he attacked former Chiefs player Otis Taylor who worked for the franchise, mistaking him for a replacement player. He would be released from the Chiefs in 1989.

He made it to the Cowboys before 1989 season started and played there for three years. He had some very good years there but was not resigned because of the Cowboys approach to the salary cap. The Vikings signed him and he led the team in tackles for three consecutive seasons. He made his one and only Pro Bowl after the 1994 season. He tried to make it with the Dolphins in 1986 but Zach Thomas outplayed him and never played with the Dolphins in a game.

He’s been a linebackers coach, defensive coordinator and head coach with different teams since 1997. He led the Jaguars to the playoffs twice (2005 and 2007), losing to the Patriots both times in the playoffs when he got there. But in nine seasons only had three winning seasons and two other .500 seasons. He got another show with the Raiders in 2015 and in three years had one winning season, coaching them to the playoffs in 2016 with a 12-4 record.

I like Jack’s loopy signature, but these cards just don’t do it justice. They are busy and unfortunately he has that dark Cowboys jersey on. I think the pictures actually show it off a little better than what they look like in person. I haven’t had tremendous luck with football coaches so it was a bit of a surprise when I got this one back.

Thanks Mr. Del Rio! I’m giving this one a 6.5.
