The Story of the Autograph

Hubie McDonough is a former center in the NHL. He played from 1988 to 1993 with the Los Angeles Kings, New York Islanders, and San Jose Sharks.

McDonough is a native of Manchester, New Hampshire. He went to college at Saint Anselm College in his home state where as a junior he was nominated for the Hobey Baker Award. Not drafted into the NHL, he would first play with the Flint Spirits in the 1986=’87 season. The Kings signed him and he debuted for them in the 1988-’89 season.

He played about a year and a half with the Kings before being traded to the Islanders. That deal involved he and Ken Baumgartner going to New York for Mikko Makela. He spent the most seasons with the Islanders, playing as many as 54 games in a season which he did in the first season he palyed there. That was his best professional season as with the two clubs he played with in 1989-’90 he had 21 goals and 15 assists, both career highs.

He was traded to the San Jose Sharks for cash in what would be his final professional season. McDonough continued to play in the minor leagues after that, including in the AHL with the Manchester Monarchs, his hometown team. He would go on to work in the front office and coach with Manchester and other minor league teams.

This return from Hubie shows the highs and lows of hockey cards. The Pro Set card has him in that dark jersey and while there’s a lot of white around him, that’s not a natural place to sign. So you can really see his signature. The 1990 Score card on the other hand is the complete opposite and because of that, more obviously the best of this return.

Thanks Mr. McDonough! I’m giving this return a 7 overall.
