The Story of the Autograph

Greg Swindell is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. In the first half of his career he worked as a starter and the second half as a reliever. He played from 1986 to 2002 with the Cleveland Indians (twice), Cincinnati Reds, Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins, Boston Red Sox, and Arizona Diamondbacks.

Swindell is a native of Texas who was born in Fort Worth and raised in Houston. He helped his high school team to a state championship in his junior year and then went on to attend the University of Texas. He had a great college career and was a three-time finalize for the Golden Spikes Award. That was good enough for the Cleveland Indians to draft him with the second overall pick in the first round of the 1986 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut that same season on August 21, 1986.

After two seasons of a time between the minors and the majors he broke out in 1988. He had three great seasons starting with an 18-14 record with a 3.20 ERA in 1988. The next year he earned his one and only All-Star appearance and went 13-6 with a 3.38 ERA. After some great years in Cleveland he was traded to the Reds and then moved to Houston as a free agent. He had some OK years in Houston and then moved back to Cleveland to finish out 1996.

This is when his transition to the bullpen happened. He eventually made it to it to Arizona and was part of their 2001 World Series Championship team.

The Score on Greg Swindell – 5.5

I felt really fortunate to find Greg last year summer while with the Sugar Land Skeeters and what they did during the pandemic last summer. They basically had a mini-season with a few teams they put together and Greg was a coach. These came out great but they got to my house during a rain storm and were super soaked. They seem to have dried out well. They probably would have score much higher if not for the water issues.

Thanks Mr. Swindell! This return gets a 5.5.
