The Story of the Autograph

Gene Nelson is a former right-handed pitcher in the major leagues who mostly worked as a reliever during his career. He played from 1981 to 1993 with the New York Yankees, Seattle Mariners, Chicago White Sox, Oakland Athletics, California Angels, and Texas Rangers.

Nelson was born and raised in the Tampa area of Florida. He was drafted by the Texas Rangers out of high school in the 30th round of the 1978 MLB Draft. He never made it to the majors with the Ranger though. In 1979 he was traded to the Yankees with Ray Fontenot to complete a deal that sent the Rangers Oscar Gamble and Mickey Rivers among others. He got his first shot with the Yanks and made his debut on May 4, 1981 and would appear in eight games (seven of them starts) that first season.

He was moved to the Mariners via trade with Bobby Brown for Bill Caudill and Shane Rawley. He worked mostly as a starter in Seattle and was then traded to the White Sox for Jerry Don Gleaton where he started to move more to a relief role. In the last traded of his career he went to the Athletics for Donnie Hill and see the longest stint with any team in his career.

With the Athletics he played for some great teams, winners that would eventually win the 1989 World Series and play in the Series in 1988 and 1990 as well. During those years he would frequently act as the set up man for Dennis Eckersley.

He closed out his career with the Angels and Rangers in 1993

Gene has a pretty standard style of signature, but it came out pretty well on these cards. I think the 1991 Topps Stadium Club or the 1989 Topps are my favorites of the bunch. The 1991 Leaf is certainly interesting because of its orientation.

Thanks Mr. Nelson! I’m giving you a 7.
