The Story of the Autograph

Gary Wayne is a former left-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played in six seasons from 1989 to 1994. He played for the Minnesota Twins, Colorado Rockies and Los Angeles Dodgers during that span.

Wayne was born and raised in Michigan. He stayed home for college and went to the University of Michigan to play for the Wolverines. He was first drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the 23rd rounds of the 1983 MLB Draft and then by the Montreal Expos in the fourth round of the 1984 MLB Draft where he signed. Before he could make it to the majors the Twins took him from the Expos in the 1988 rule 5 draft. He made his major league debut the following year on April 7, 1989.

He spent four years in Minnesota with a high of 60 appearances in that first year he played for them. Unfortunately he wasn’t in the majors much in 1991 when the Twins went on their run to a second championship. He only appeared in eight games for them that year.

The Twins traded Wayne to the Rockies where he would become part of their inaugural team in 1993. He appeared in a career high 65 games that season and had a 5-3 record. Unfortunately he also had a 5.05 ERA also. He would then move on to the Dodgers in what would be his final season in the majors. He made his final appearance on June 3, 1994.

Gary was part of my recent quest to get some more of the expansion teams (Rockies, Marlins, D-Backs and Rays) into my collection. I love finding guys like this who maybe just had a little bit of time with that team so I can get those uniforms into my collection. He has a bit of a wiggly signature, especially with that “G” but it seems like the rest might be OK.

Thanks Mr. Wayne! I’m giving this return a 6.
