The Story of the Autograph

Fred Marion played as a safety in the NFL from 1982 to 1991. He played all ten of those season in New England with the Patriots.  The Patriots drafted him with the 112th overall pick in the fifth round of the 1982 NFL Draft.

Marion grew up in Gainesville, FL and went to the University of Miami where he earned All-American honors as a senior. The Patriots drafted him in 1982 and he didn’t start any games in his first two years. He started 10 games in 1984 and took over starting all the game he played in until the end of his career. His best year overall was 1985 when he racked up seven interceptions and a league leading 189 return yards from those. He also recovered three fumbles that year. His play that year earned him All-Pro honors and a trip to the Pro Bowl. Hopefully that took some of the sting out of the Super Bowl loss to the Bears that year.

He only ever scored one touchdown in his career. It came in 1986 against the Pittsburgh Steelers when he intercepted Bubby Brister and ran it back 37 yards.

It doesn’t work all the time, but I like the effort of when guys think outside the box. Using a different color marker is a cool way to make your autograph individual and Fred did a good job of that. Not only is his autograph pretty cool anyway, but the red really makes its mark. It’s kind of funny that he only put the bible verse on one card. Maybe he only does it to the first or last card he signs or something like that.

Thanks Mr. Marion! I’m giving these an 8. One of the best quality returns all year.
