The Story of the Autograph

Ed Ott played as a catcher in the major leagues from 1974 through 1981. All but one year of that time was spent in Pittsburgh with the Pirates and 1981 was spent with the Angels.

Ott started out as a right fielder for the Pirates in 1974. The next year he converted to catcher and backed up Manny Sanguillen and Duffy Dyer. He would platoon with Dyer after Sanguillen was traded in 1977. During the Pirates 1979 World Series championship season he would platoon with Steve Nicosia and have one of his best seasons. That year Ott batted .273 and had seven homers and 51 RBI in 117 games. During the 1979 Series he hit .333 and had three RBI.

The Pirates traded Ott to the California Angels in April of 1981 because a young Tony Pena was on his way to the majors to take over catching. He didn’t have a great year in 1981 and tore his rotator cuff the next year and missed the entire season. He played a few minor league game over the next two years and then retired.

Ed has a pretty fancy signature. I really hope I can find some better cards of his because I think signature would be great on the right card. Unfortunately that ’83 card is a bit dark (and he didn’t even play that year). And in the 1981 card he has that dark catchers gear on. Still, he seems to find a pretty good spot to sign.

Thanks Mr. Ott! I’m giving this return a 6.
