The Story of the Autograph
Doug McDermott is a small forward in the NBA and currently plays for the New York Knicks. In his short time in the NBA he’s played for the Chicago Bulls, Oklahoma City Thunder and now the Knicks. Doug comes off the bench and is a pretty good shooter from long range.
McDermott was born in North Dakota and grew up in North Dakota and Iowa. His movement to different places was mostly to follow his father to new jobs as his father, Greg, has coached at the collegiate level for a while. Doug went to college at Creighton and played for his father. While there Creighton was a very strong mid-major and played the big boys tough. They would win some big games and knock off some good teams in the NCAA tournaments. In college McDermott was MVC and Big East Player of the Year, MVP of the MVC Tournament, First-team All-MVC and All-Big East and the greatest honor, the 2014 National College Player of the Year. He set an NCAA record by scoring in double figures for 135 games over his career. He’s one of three players in NCAA men’s basketball history to record 3,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
In the 2014 NBA Draft Doug was drafted 11th overall by the Denver Nuggets. He didn’t make it through draft night as a Nugget though and was traded to the Bulls. During his rookie campaign he did injure his knee and had surgery but would come back to play that year. He spent until 2017 with the Bulls when they traded him to the Thunder. In his three and half years with the Bulls he started just a handful of games. In 2016 he average just under ten points (9.4) per game on 45% shooting and 42.5% from 3-point range. 2016-17 was his best year in Chicago when he was averaging 10.1 points, one assist and three rebounds per game before the trade.
Doug played the rest of 2017 out with the Thunder and this past summer was traded with Enes Kanter and a pick to the New York Knicks in the Carmelo Anthony deal.
The Score on Doug McDermott – 7.0
Doug has a good signature and I like the way it came out on this item. Plus I love the old school feel to the Sports Illustrated cover. But the real score for this one goes to Doug’s Mom. As you can see from the note she wrote to me on this letter, she had to get him to sign it when they went to New York for Christmas. I sent it to him while he was with the Thunder, but Doug Mom made sure that it didn’t get forgotten. I thought the note was great and I love having it.
Thanks Doug, and Doug’s Mom Theresa! This one gets a 7, but I have a feeling most of that goes to Theresa.
