The Story of the Autograph

Doug Dieken is a former tackle in the National Football League. He played from 1971 to 1984 and spent his entire career in Cleveland with the Browns.

Dieken is a native of Streator, Illinois. Like a lot of players in those days he played multiple positions in high school and was name All-State in 1966. He went to college at Illinois and continued to play at tight end. But Illinois was not playing an offense that passed much in those days. The Browns would draft him in the sixth round of the 1971 NFL Draft.

The Browns converted him to play left tackle. He would be just the third left tackle in the team’s history. He played the run and the pass well and he was a very durable player. He had a team record 194 straight starts and 203 consecutive games played at one point. He was chosen to be a Pro Bowler in 1980 and won the NFL Man of the Year award in 1982.

After his played days he went into radio and was a color commentator for Browns games. He did that through the 2021 season until he retired. He worked for the Browns for 51 years, including the three years they didn’t have a team because he was a spokesman for the team those years.

I love this return from Doug. Old football cards have become a recent favorite of mine. I think it helps that Doug face on the older cards is so great. Seems like he’s have a great time out there doesn’t it? I think my favorite is that 1977 Topps card, which might be one of my favorite 70’s football card designs anyway.

Thanks Mr. Dieken! I’m giving this return a 7.
