The Story of the Autograph
Deron Cherry is a former safety in the National Football League. He played from 1981 to 1991 and spent his entire career with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Cherry was born and raised in New Jersey. He went to Rutgers where he played as a free safety and punter. He went undrafted and the Chiefs signed him as a free agent in 1981. He was released in final cuts but later rejoined the team and played in thirteen games that first season.
In 1983 he broke out and started to show why he would be one of the best safeties to ever play the game. He was a full-time starter that season and intercepted seven passes. That would start a string of five out of the next six seasons getting at least seven interceptions including a career high nine in 1986.
During those years he made six Pro Bowls and was First-Team All-Pro for three of them. Maybe even better is that he won the 1987 Byron “Whizzer” White NFL Man of the Year award. He continues working for charitable causes and organizations today.
The Score on Deron Cherry – 7.5
I always loved Deron’s name and I kind of always though it interesting that he was a Chief with the red helmet that looked like a cherry. He puts a good bit of ink on the card and his signature is huge. But it’s not just big, it’s got some style to it. I think the best version of these is the 1990 Pro Set card.
Thanks Mr. Cherry! I’m giving this return a 7.5.
