The Story of the Autograph

Dennis Powell is a former left-handed pitcher in the major leagues. His career in the majors was eight seasons between the years of 1985 and 1993. He played for the Dodgers, Mariners (twice), and Brewers.

Powell was born and raised in Moultrie, Georgia. The Dodgers signed him as an amateur free agent in May of 1983. After two years in the minors he made his debut for the Dodgers on July 7, 1985. After a couple years of mostly relief appearances he was moved to the Mariners in a trade involving Matt Young.

His first stint in Seattle wasn’t great. He was granted free agency in May of 1990 and signed with the Brewers for the rest of that season. But in 1991 while he signed with a couple teams he didn’t make it back into the majors until he got back with Seattle in 1992. That season he put up his one and only winning record (4-2) in the most appearances he ever had (49) with one of the best ERAs he ever had (4.58).

After one more year in the majors with the Mariners he was out of the league. He tried again with the Pirates in 1993 but his next major league appearances would be in Japan with the Kinetsu Buffaloes in 1995 before he retired from baseball.

Dennis has a sweet signature. I love the way he uses those curved lines for his “D” and “P”. It’s got a lot of style but unfortunately its a little small and it gets eaten up on the cards a little bit. Some of that is because of the blue-on-blue thing and some of it is because the cards are busy where he signed. If it was a bit bigger I think it would have cut through that.

Thanks Mr. Powell! I’m giving this return a 6.
