The Story of the Autograph

Dave Tobik is a former right-handedrelief pitcher in the major leagues. He played from 1978 to 1985 with the Detroit Tigers, Texas Rangers and Seattle Mariners.

Tobik was born and raised in Ohio. He went on to attend Ohio University was an All-American there from 1971 to 1974. He was first drafted by the Montreal Expos in the third round of the 1974 MLB Draft but didn’t sign. Then the Tigers drafted him in the first round of the 1975 MLB Draft with the second overall pick. After a few years in the minors he made his major league debut for Detroit on August 26, 1978.

He had some pretty good seasons out of the bullpen with the Tigers. Then in 1982 the Tigers closer, Dave Rozema, was hurt. He developed a forkball and Sparky Anderson referred to him as the “king” of the bullpen. Anderson rode Tobik and others while he could that season.

Tobik moved on to the Rangers and the Mariners before the end of his career in the majors. But before his last appearance with the Mariners, he signed with the Calgary Cannons in 1985, the first player to sign with the new team. HE ended up winning a career high twelve games with them.

Dave has a pretty small signature and what’s going on on these cards don’t help it much. I think not only is it small, it just didn’t come out very well on all these. The picture isn’t great to show you that, but the 1983 Topps card you can kind of see that it’s not great quality, I think because it’s bleeding a bit on the card.

Thanks Mr. Tobik! I’m giving this return a 5.
