The Story of the Autograph

Dave Lemanczyk is a former starting and relief pitcher in the major leagues. The right-hander played from 1973 to 1980 with the Detroit Tigers, Toronto Blue Jays, and California Angels.

Lemanczyk is a native of New York. He went to Hartwick College in Oneonta, New York. He was drafted by the Tigers in the 16th round of the 1972 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut for the Tigers the following season on April 15, 1973. That was the only game he played that first season as he was sent back down having given up three runs in 2.1 innings pitched. He continued to work as mostly a reliever in the coming seasons.

In 1975 he was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1976 MLB Expansion Draft. He got his most significant shot in the majors, pitching in 34 games, all of them starts, and putting up a 13-16 record with a 4.25 ERA. Those thirteen wins led the new franchise in their first season. He would played three and a half more seasons in Canada, earning an All-Star nod in 1979, before being traded to the Angels for what would later be Ken Schrom. He finished out that last season with the Angels and played his final game with them on September 27, 1980.

These days he runs a baseball school on Long Island and has been a pitching coach at New York Baseball Academy.

The Score on Dave Lemanczyk – 5.5

Dave has a bit of a fancy signature. It is a little bit small though. It kind of disappeared within that 1980 Topps card. I need to try to get more of his cards with him on the Tigers too. I’m glad I have that 1979 card though because he had his only All-Star appearance that year. I’m also glad I got him in a Toronto uniform given his role in that first season of the Blue Jays.

Thanks Mr. Lemanczyk! I’m giving this return a 5.5.
