The Story of the Autograph

Dave Heaverlo is a former pitcher in the major leagues. The right-handed reliever played from 1975 to 1981 and during that time played for the San Francisco Giants, Oakland Athletics (twice), and Seattle Mariners.

Heaverlo is a Washington state native. He went to college at Central Washington University and graduated from there in 1973, later becoming a member of their hall of fame. He was drafted twice before signing with a major league team. The first was by the San Diego Padres in the ninth round of the 1972 MLB Draft and the second was a year later in the first round of the 1973 MLB Draft by the Giants with the 23rd overall pick.

He made his major league debut just two years later on April 14, 1975. He pitched well for the Giants in his first three years. He went 12-6 overall with a 3.11 ERA in 159 games with 237 innings pitched. Before the 1978 season he was traded by the Giants with several players including Gary Thomasson for Vida Blue.

After two years of more than 60 appearances with some A’s teams that were past their championship winning seasons, he was claimed off waivers by the Mariners and played in Seattle for the 1980 season. He ended up pitching well with a 6-3 record and 3.89 ERA. But he only spent one year there and then signed with the Athletics for what would be his last major league season in 1981.

I definitely want to try Dave again. The marker just wasn’t cutting it on these but I think once you start you can’t stop when you’re signing. I’m glad I got him on both a Mariners and Giants card because that’s where he had some of his best seasons. I’m also glad the card that came out the best is that 1978 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Heaverlo! I’m getting this return a 4.
