The Story of the Autograph

Chuck Goggin is a former second baseman in the major leagues. He played with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Atlanta Braves, and Boston Red Sox from 1972 to 1974.

Goggin was born and raised in Pompano Beach, Florida. He then went to Broward College in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He was never drafted and the Los Angeles Dodgers signed him as an amateur free agent in 1964. He wouldn’t ever appear for the Dodgers in the majors though. Beofre making it to the big leagues he served in Vietnam in 1966 and ’67 with the Marines. He was awarded the Bronze Start and Purple Heart and is the most decorated Vietnam War veteran to play in the league.

After coming back home he played more in the minors and the Dodgers traded him and another minor leaguer to the Pirates in August 1969 for Jim Bunning. He made his major league debut for Pittsburgh on September 8, 1972. In 1973 he started with the Pirates and played one game before having his contract purchased by the Braves. He would then play in 64 games for Atlanta, by far the most he would play in any season, hitting .289 with seven RBI and five doubles.

The Braves traded him to the Red Sox for Vic Correll. He only played in two games for the Red Sox in 1974 and wouldn’t play in the minors again. He went into coaching in the minors and in the Mexican Pacific League. While in the Mexican league he coached a team that included Rickey Henderson and Randy Niemann.

This is a special return in a few way. First, Chuck isn’t a guy that played very much in the majors so he was pretty lucky to get a card with any team he played for. While I don’t go out of my way to get them, I like having guys like that in the collection. But second, Chuck was pretty lucky to be able to play after fighing in Vietnam. Obviously he was a decorated soldier, so it’s also special for that reason most of all.

Thanks Mr. Goggin! I’m giving this return a 6.
