The Story of the Autograph

Carl Willis is a former right-handed relief pitcher in the major leagues. He played in nine seasons between 1984 and 1995 for the Detroit Tigers, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox and Minnesota Twins.

Willis was born in Virgina and grew up in North Carolina. He went to the University of North Carolina, Wilmington and was drafted from there twice. He was first drafted in the 31st round of the 1982 MLB Draft by the San Francisco Giants but didn’t sign with them. The following year the Tigers drafted him in the 23rd round. He signed with them and then made his major league debut with them the following year on June 9, 1984.

He wouldn’t be with the Tigers much longer after that though. In September of that year they traded him as a player to be named later that sent Bill Scherrer to the Tigers. Too bad for Willis because the Tigers were on their way to winning a championship later that year. He would played a bit for the Reds over the next three seasons before being up and down and with the White Sox, Angels, and Indians.

Willis found his place with the Twins in 1991. He had signed with them as a free agent and after missing out on a run to a championship in 1984, he got his shot with the Twins in 1991 and got a ring. He played the rest of his career with the Twins until 1995.

These days Carl is a pitching coach for the Cleveland Guardians having prior been with the Mariners and Red Sox.

The Score on Carl Willis – 6.5

BraveSTARR Score LogoBraveSTARR Score 6.5

Carl has a pretty simplified signature. It seems to be pretty bunched up all together in to one name. It actually looks like “CaWlli”. I like how those appear sometimes even if I prefer them to be really legible. Not that his isn’t, it’s no where near some. I think my favorite of these is the 1987 Topps card.

Thanks Mr. Willis! I’m giving this return a 6.5 overall.
