The Story of the Autograph

Butch Wynegar played as a catcher in the majors from 1976 through 1988. He played for the Twins, Yankees and Angels and was a two-time All-Star. These days he is a hitting coach in the minors for the Pirates affiliate in Bradenton.

Wynegar was drafted by the Twins in the 1974 MLB Draft in the second round. He was a great hitter in the minors hitting a league leading .346 in 1974 and then a top-5 mark of .314 the next year. The Twins invited him to camp in 1976 and he made the team without playing in Double or Triple-A. He was the fourth youngest player in the AL in his first year and he was named to the All-Star team. He finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year race to Mark Fidrych. He made his second All-Star team the next year.

He was traded to the Yankees in 1982 and finished out a pretty good year with them in 1982. He would go on the platoon with Rick Cerone in 1983 and catch Dave Righetti’s no-hitter that year. He was the primary catcher the next year but some injuries impacted his stats after getting hit in the hand while standing in the on-deck circle. After resigning with the Yankees in ’86, a lot of things started to wear on him and caused him to be depressed. He asked for out of New York. After the season he was traded to the Angels where he finished out his career.

Butch has a great big signature and I love it. He didn’t sign his ’85 card for me and that would have been the one that took the signature the best. But that said, I really like these Twins cards that he signed because those were probably his best years.

Thanks Mr. Wynegar! I’m giving these a 6.5.
